Haendel Sebastian Rodriguez, Colombia

Haendel's MEG journey and his post-graduation career

I’m a career diplomat and my personal interest in environmental issues led me to be part of the coordination for environmental issues at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, where I took part in several international negotiations. Although this working experience was very satisfying, I was lacking a stronger foundation on environmental issues, especially regarding the participation of different stakeholders in such international processes. That was the main reason why I decided to apply for MEG. My experience during the program exceeded by far my most optimistic expectations.

The multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach of MEG allowed me not only to gain new practical knowledge for improving my work performance but also to explore totally different perspectives on how environmental problems are perceived and how innovative solution can be developed worldwide. A fundamental element that made this possible was, without a doubt, the opportunity of meeting and discussing with people from all the world, specially from the Global South. The program was a unique opportunity for understanding how to build effective partnerships between people from different academic backgrounds and cultures.

I went back to Colombia after MEG and rejoined the Environmental Affairs Team, where I had the chance of participating as Chief of the Colombian Delegation in several international negotiations on environmental issues. During this experience, I had the chance of applying the knowledge gained in MEG, which enriched my contribution to the negotiations. Likewise, the intercultural skills obtained during the program helped me to be a good facilitator during international processes related to forest governance, climate change and regulation of pollutants, among others.

Since September 2020 I am Deputy Chief of Mission of the Colombian Embassy to Denmark, where I also had the honor of serving as Chargé D’affairs (Chief of Mission) for 6 months. My expertise in the environmental field gained during MEG was decisive for my appointment in a country internationally known for its climate ambition and progress. During my term in Denmark, I have contributed to strengthening the environmental cooperation between our countries, positioning this issue as central in our bilateral relation. Being part of MEG has significantly contributed to progress in my professional career and has given me an international network of friendships that remain strong until today.
